Our mini trek experience will be on a five mile trail known as Mormon Flats, located just south of East Canyon reservoir. The trail we have chosen was originally cut by those in the Donner/Reed party in 1846. Because of their work, our Mormon pioneer ancestors saved countless hours and resources in their journey to Zion. You will be walking on the very same trail they walked. Imagine what we would hear if the rocks and hills could talk.
1) Scout masters: You will be assigned to support in first aid. Please bring appropriate kits for youth hiking five miles on relatively rough dirt trails, by water and around loads of wildlife. Plan to watch over your ward’s youth. The trail will be up hill and increase in elevation by about 1000 ft.
2) Beehive leaders: Plan for possible emergency bathroom stops. There are appropriate restrooms at the beginning and end of the trail, but we expect to be in between them about four hours.
3) Youth: You should have your ‘Mini Trail of Faith’ requirements now (see below). For the best experience please have them completed before trek and be prepared to share experiences of your ancestor or Book of Mormon pioneer.
Additional items to remember:
1) Adult leaders in each ward will need to organize rides for your youth. We will plan to leave the stake center at 8am, and return after 2pm. Breakfast will start at 7am.
2) A prepared youth will have sunscreen, bug spray, hat, hiking shoes (broken in) and their completed ‘Mini Trail of Faith’. A small pack for snacks and a water bottle is appropriate.
3) Final count and release forms (use standard release form found below) should be turned in by/at Stake Conference.
4) The mini trek is intended to give our 12-13 year olds a pioneer experience where they can feel closer to their ancestors, gain an appreciation for doing hard things and build their testimony of Jesus Christ. It was that very testimony that brought the pioneers to this valley nearly 170 years ago.
We are confident that youth and leaders prepare spiritually and physically for mini trek, personal testimonies will be increased.

It does not look like there is a Medical Release Form required for the Mini Trek. Is that correct?
ReplyDeleteWe will just be using the standard church release, that is available on lds.org or in the youth manuals. There will also be one attached here soon.
